The export of Italian wine seems to have returned to robust growth, which in the first phase of 2021 however seems to be driven by the growth of its "second-tier" markets, in terms of absolute values, such as China or Russia, which seem to compensate the negative signs that are recorded more or less in top markets such as the United States and the United Kingdom. A sign of a fluidity and an increasingly articulated composition of the wine markets, but also a testimony, probably, of how different areas and countries of the world are reacting to a pandemic that is slower to overcome than hoped for. In any case, the reading by WineNews of the Istat data, updated today, on wine exports of the Belpaese in the first quarter of 2021, which exceeded 2 billion euros, up by 4, is comforting. An overall growth, but which is not valid for all countries, as mentioned, with many important markets still far from the levels of 2020, suffering, but slightly recovering compared to previous months. Like the United States , for example, still at -3.1% on the first 4 months of last year, which still remain the first market in value with 510 million euros (and from which in recent months, as told by many producers in WineNews, important signs of recovery have arrived, ed), or the United Kingdom , third market in value at 170 million euros in the first quarter of 2021, but with a significant -12.1% on 2020. Canada also slows down , to - 9.4% for 106 million euros. On the other hand, among the most important markets in value, it grew by + 4.1%Germany , at 359 million euros, Switzerland does very well with a jump of + 23%, to 133 million euros, and France grows by + 11% , to 62 million euros. Same value as Sweden , one of the most important markets in Northern Europe for Italian wine, which however loses -12.8%. The greatest percentage growth, however, is recorded in China , which with a jump of + 73% imported Italian wine for 41 million euros, and Russia seems to be racing again , at + 34%, for 37 million euros. Overall encouraging data, therefore, albeit to be read in the light of some critical issues and a situation linked to the pandemic which, as we have all learned in these very hard months, can change radically in a short time. But the aggregate data of agri-food exports in the first 5 months of 2021 also gives hope, in which, according to the Coldiretti analysis, growth was + 8.9% over 2020, for an overall record value, around 17 billion euros.
